When is the Best Time to do My Menu?


The title of this post is one of the most frequently asked questions we hear throughout our clinics. Seriously. We get asked that question ALL. The. Time.

If you’re an Egoscue client or if you have read any of Pete’s books, then you already know the best-case scenario answer to the question. In a perfect world, you would wake in the morning, grab a glass of water, and get started on your menu. The sun would be shining, the birds would be chirping, and your body would be pain free and without any limitations. Basically, you should wake up and assume the role of Superman or Wonder Woman.

But…this isn’t a perfect world. You hit snooze on the alarm. You opt for coffee instead of water, because…coffee. The kids are screaming (or is that only in my house with my three boys?). It’s raining outside. And, you feel like Homer Simpson instead of Superman.

That’s reality sometimes, isn’t it?

We don’t always have the time to get our menu finished by 7:00 AM. And, that’s okay. Sure, we at Egoscue would LOVE it if you started your day with your menu. You’d be setting yourself up for the remainder of your day. You would be building the functional foundation that is so crucial to your health and well being.

But the truth is I don’t really care when you do your menu as long as you do your menu. It could be 7:00 in the morning, but it could also be 9:00 at night. Sure, it’s not ideal to do your menu and then go to bed shortly after, but it’s still beneficial to do it.

As an example, yesterday was a crazy day for me. I was working basically non-stop with the exception of my lunch break and a quick trip to the gym. However, last night as I was putting my boys to bed (they do eventually quiet down), I found myself with an extra 15-20 minutes. My boys were taking forever to get their teeth brushed and pajamas on, and when I say forever, I mean F O R E V E R.

So, I decided to take lemons and make lemonade.

I spent those 15 minutes going through my menu. I grabbed a pillow off of my son’s bed and used that in lieu of a standard Egoscue block. I also didn’t have a strap, but I improvised and did what e-cises I could without having the strap upstairs with me. At the end of those 15 minutes, my menu was finished, I felt great, and my boys were ready for bed. We read a chapter out of The Mouse and the Motorcycle and turned the lights out.

My schedule wasn’t perfect yesterday, but I did my menu, and that is the key. Yes, it was at 8:00 PM, rather than 8:00 AM, but I did it. I introduced a positive stimuli on my body, a functional stimuli on my body, and today I’m better for it.
