The Meningitis Outbreak

By now I’m sure you’ve heard something about the meningitis outbreak that is sweeping the nation. If you haven’t, there are now a total of 137 total reported cases of fungal meningitis, with 44 of those right here in Tennessee, believed to be from tainted doses of steroid injections. Every day, hundreds, if not thousands, of folks get steroid injections in an attempt to eliminate back pain. With the recent outbreak, authorities are saying as many as 13,000 patients were injected with the tainted steroids. Scary, scary stuff.

I think there’s a huge lesson to be learned here. Please hear me when I say that I’m not anti-steroid injection, and the lesson to be learned is not “I-told-you-so-and-you-shouldn’t-have-done-that.” Many clients of mine have had steroid injections prior to coming in-clinic in an attempt to get the acute inflammation alleviated. Some folks are in such horrible pain that without the injection, they wouldn’t be able to do many e-cise, if any at all. In a situation like that, an injection could help facilitate the healing process; decreased inflammation means the client can comfortably get into different positions and we can actually get some work done. By having the injection, we can start the healing process faster.

With that being said, I think the lesson to be learned here is simple: We are at risk anytime we put something man-made, inside our bodies. This is true with everything from steroid injections to medications. It’s true with artificial joints, and it’s true with artificial food.

Remember — The body is designed without flaws and without blemishes.

It’s perfect.

It’s enough.

The body, given the chance, will heal itself. While that might seem out of the realm of possibilities based on your current condition or circumstance, it’s true. We can’t mask pain with a pill or a shot. We have to interpret pain by listening to what the body is telling us. We can’t only replace the joint. We have to dig deeper to find out why that particular joint wore out and the other one didn’t.

I was staring chronic pain in the face at the age of 14. Actually, it might have looked as though I was staring, but I was more so glassed-over. Dazed. I felt like a zombie, shuffling around “dead.” I was tolerating my pain and tolerating my days. In the moment, I was scared–terrified that I would be in pain the rest of my life. I was told my next option, my only option left, was surgery. I was told that my history was my destiny.

But that just wasn’t true.

I gave my body a chance to heal itself, and it did. No more bulging disc. No more pain. No more limitations.

Instead: I am healed. I am pain free. I am limitless.

You can be too.

And, to top it all off, the process was simple. If you are wanting to get started, download our Four Free E-cises today.
