Putting the ‘Green’ Back in Greensburg
This doesn’t really have anything to do with chronic pain, but it is a feel-good story. I found this article in the NY Times today, and couldn’t help but smile. It’s about Greensburg, KS and their rebuilding efforts after a devastating tornado in ’07 that essentially leveled the entire town. Being from Wichita, KS, and having waited nervously and patiently for countless tornadoes to pass overhead, I’ve seen similar devastation firsthand. Fortunately, my family has been extremely lucky and dodged several bullets over the years, unlike many of the communities around them.
I’m glad to hear that not only is Greensburg rebuilding, they’re going green while they’re at it. What a great example of perseverance and seeing the glass as half-full. I’m sure some residence might have moved away to escape the tragedy of that day, and I honestly can’t blame them. But, for the rest of those in the community who stayed to rebuild, their efforts are paying off. It’s amazing what a small town of only 900 can accomplish. My hat is off to the citizens of Greensburg. Keep up the great work!
If you’re ever passing through Greensburg, do two things: 1) Don’t blink, or you’ll miss it, and 2) Stop and visit the World’s Largest Hand-Dug Well, and be sure to walk the 105 steps to the bottom. It’s pretty impressive and quite the engineering accomplishment!
